Valsad District Disaster Management Authority: Makar Sankranti 2026 Advisory

As the city of Valsad gears up for the vibrant festival of Makar Sankranti on January 14, 2026, the District Disaster Branch and Emergency Operation Center have issued a high-priority safety advisory. To ensure that the spirit of Uttarayan remains celebratory and accident-free, the administration has introduced the “Triple S” Mantra: Sagandari (Wisdom), Sadbhav (Goodwill), and Savcheti (Caution). From protecting innocent birds to preventing fatal falls, here is everything you need to know to stay safe this festive season.

  1. Rooftop & Structural Safety: Check Before You Fly

The thrill of a “Patang Jung” (kite fight) often leads to a lapse in physical awareness.

  • Boundary Wall Check: Ensure your terrace has a sturdy parapet wall of sufficient height. If the wall is low, avoid flying kites near the edges.
  • Avoid Slanted Roofs: Flying kites from sloping or dilapidated roofs is strictly discouraged.
  • Field Over Terrace: The administration recommends choosing open grounds over crowded rooftops to minimize fall risks.
  1. Electrical Hazards: The Silent Danger

Kite strings (manjha) can become lethal conductors if they come into contact with power lines.

  • High-Tension Wires: Never fly kites near overhead electrical cables.
  • Felt Kites: If your kite gets entangled in power lines, DO NOT pull it or try to dislodge it using metal rods or stones. This can cause a flashover or fatal electric shock.
  1. Protecting Our Avian Friends: The ‘Karuna Abhiyan’

Our sky belongs to the birds first. The 2026 advisory places heavy emphasis on the Karuna Abhiyan to protect birds from deadly strings.

  • The “No-Fly” Hours: Avoid flying kites between 6:00 AM to 8:00 AM and 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM. These are peak movement hours for birds returning to or leaving their nests.
  • Ban on Chinese Manjha: The use of nylon, plastic, or synthetic “Chinese” thread is a punishable offense. These strings do not break and act as a razor for birds and commuters alike.
  1. Personal Safety & First Aid
  • Attire: Wear well-fitted clothes. Loose scarves or long dupattas can easily get caught in the spinning reel (firki) or moving threads.
  • Hydration & Sun Protection: Since you will be under the sun for hours, keep water and sunscreen handy to avoid heat exhaustion.
  • Emergency Kit: Keep a basic First Aid kit on the terrace, including antiseptic liquid, bandages, and burn cream.
  1. Emergency Contact Directory (2026)

In case of an accident or an injured bird, save these numbers immediately:

Department / ServiceContact Number
District Control Room (Valsad)02632-243238 / 240212 / 1077
Ambulance Service108
Karuna Abhiyan (Injured Birds)1962

A Message from the Collectorate

“The joy of the festival lies in shared happiness, not in tragedies. By following these simple guidelines, the citizens of Valsad can ensure that every kite that soars is a symbol of life and celebration.”
